LA TENDENCIA A LA MANÍA EN EL MELANCÓLICO

La vigencia de Freud es científica. Leemos: “La peculiaridad más singular de la melancolía es su tendencia a transformarse en manía, o sea en un estado sintomáticamente opuesto. Sin embargo, no toda melancolía sufre esta transformación. Algunos casos no pasan de recidivas periódicas, cuyos intervalos muestran cuanto más un ligerísimo matiz de manía. Otros presentan aquella alternativa regular de fases melancólicas y maniacas, que constituye la locura cíclica. Excluiríamos estos casos de la concepción psicógena si, precisamente para muchos de ellos, no hubiera hallado el psicoanálisis una solución y una terapéutica.

La realidad impone a cada uno de los recuerdos y esperanzas, que constituyen puntos de enlace de la libido con el objeto, su veredicto de que dicho objeto no existe ya, y el yo, situado ante la interrogación de si quiere compartir tal destino, se decide, bajo la influencia de las satisfacciones narcisistas de la vida, a cortar su ligamen con el objeto abolido”.

THE TENDENCY TO FIXATION IN THE MELANCHOLIC

Freud's validity is scientific. We read: “The most singular peculiarity of melancholy is its tendency to transform itself into mania, that is, into a symptomatically opposite state. However, not all melancholy undergoes this transformation. Some cases do not go beyond periodic recurrences, the intervals of which show the more a very slight tinge of mania. Others present that regular alternative of melancholic and manic phases, which constitutes cyclical madness. We would exclude these cases from the psychogenic conception if, precisely for many of them, psychoanalysis had not found a solution and a therapy.

Reality imposes on each one of the memories and hopes, which are points of connection between the libido and the object, its verdict that said object no longer exists, and the self, placed before the question of whether it wants to share such a destiny, decides under the influence of the narcissistic satisfactions of life, to cut his link with the abolished object.
